Tired all the time? Australian men over 40 are checking one hormone

A bulk-billed blood test, read by a doctor, is the first step. Here's what it checks and what happens after.

Prof. André van Zundert
Chief Medical Officer

Most men put it down to work, kids and getting older. Tired no matter how much you sleep. Flat by two in the afternoon. A short fuse at home. Weight that stays put whatever you do at the gym.

Those are also the everyday signs of low testosterone, and about 4 in 10 Australian men over 45 have low levels. Most of them have never had it measured.

Why it gets missed

A standard GP blood test usually checks total testosterone only, and reads it against a "normal" range that covers men of every age and weight. Two men can have the same total and feel completely different. The part your body actually uses, free testosterone, is usually never checked, and nor are the markers that explain it.

So the tiredness gets filed under stress, the mood under work, and the one number that could explain all of it never appears on a results sheet.

What a proper check looks like

Hormn is an Australian doctor-led men's health clinic. The first step is a blood test at a collection centre near you, usually a morning draw that takes ten minutes. It checks total and free testosterone plus 40 other markers, and an Australian doctor who treats low testosterone every day reads the results.

The test is bulk-billed, so it's $0 at the lab. There is no GP referral to organise and no waiting room. You see your results privately, and you keep them whatever they say.

What happens next

About 4 in 10 men who test with Hormn are told their levels are not low. They pay nothing and keep the full panel, which is how a proper clinic should work. If your levels are low, a doctor talks you through what that means and what your options are. Nothing is decided from a questionnaire, and nothing is charged unless you're eligible and choose to go ahead.

Is it worth checking?

If any of this sounds like you, the answer is usually a blood test rather than more coffee. It takes a 30-second quiz to book, ten minutes at the collection centre, and results are back in 24 to 48 hours.
